Discrimination
Discrimination means to treat a person differently, or less favorably, on the basis of a protected characteristic which affects the terms, conditions, or privileges of employment. The conduct prohibited by this policy, includes verbal, written, physical, or visual conduct that adversely affects someone based on protected characteristics which:
- affects tangible job benefits, such as hiring, firing, promotions, and compensation;
- unreasonably interferes with work performance; or
- creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive work environment.
Examples of the type of conduct prohibited by this policy include, but are not limited to:
- Epithets;
- Slurs;
- Stereotyping;
- Intimidating and/or humiliating acts; and
- The circulation or posting of written or graphic materials that show hostility toward individuals because of their protected characteristics.
VOT prohibits any such discriminatory conduct in the workplace.
